Paul Roos has been the first AFL coach to sound out disgruntled Magpie Heritier Lumumba after it was revealed Collingwood could trade the 27-year-old.

The Melbourne coach met Lumumba at an Elwood cafe early on Friday, just hours after Fairfax Media revealed that the player had been at the forefront of yet another internal club dispute.

Collingwood appears inclined to move on the contracted premiership defender after the latest incident involving the high-maintenance player, which saw Lumumba take umbrage at a graffitied advertising poster which he claimed was homophobic.

Melbourne is likely to have three picks inside the first 20 of the national draft should James Frawley - as expected - leave as a free agent.

Roos met Lumumba at Elwood's popular Turtle Cafe for more than 90 minutes early on Friday to canvass his interest in moving to the Demons.

Manager Ben Niall has denied Lumumba wanted to retire but has confirmed both Collingwood and the player were weighing up whether it was time to part ways.
