UPDATE: HOMICIDE detectives say the semi-nude body of a man found at a suburban tip in Melbourne’s southeast appears to have been dumped there by a garbage truck, and shows no signs of injury.

Police were called after the grisly discovery was made at the waste management facility on Hallam Rd, Hampton Park, about 8.40am.

Speaking at a media conference at the site this afternoon, Detective Sen-Sgt Shane O’Connell said the man’s body — found among general household and industrial waste — was semi-naked and showed no apparent injuries.

Sen-Sgt O’Connell said a “very observant staff member” initially thought the body was a mannequin before investigating further.

Homicide detectives have begun an investigation after a body was discovered at a Victorian landfill site.

It is thought the body was dumped at the landfill centre, probably, by garbage truck this morning.

“At this stage we are yet to identify the deceased male,” Sen-Sgt O’Connell said.

“Based on our inquiries so far, we believe he was brought in one of the trucks this morning.

“We haven’t determined how he died ... There are no apparent injuries,” he said.

Sen-Sgt O’Connell said the body was “semi-clothed” but that police were “not sure how he was this morning.”

It is not known if machinery has accidentally come into contact with the body.

The dead man was also not wearing any shoes or carrying identification.

But Sen-Sgt O’Connel’ said he did not think the man had been dead for long.

The dead man appeared to be middle-aged, but Sen-Sgt O’Connell said police were hopeful that a pathologist report later today would reveal how the man died.

Police were now checking which vehicles had entered the site since 6am — when the centre opened — to determine which truck brought the body to the centre, and from where.

The police helicopter, detectives and support vehicles have converged at the site, which has now been cordoned off, as officers continue combing the area for clues.

It is understood the search is concentrating on two areas of the site, about 500m inside the landfill centre.

The centre is been closed to normal traffic.

The landfill takes waste from homes, businesses and industry from the eastern and south-eastern suburbs.

Heavy trucks that normally bring waste and recyclables to the centre have been turned away to give police clear access to the site.

It is expected police will remain on scene for several hours before the body can be removed.
