THE Queen’s galloper Estimate heads a list of 31 international runners who have been nominated for the Melbourne Cup.
The Sir Michael Stoute-trained mare, who has been an unpredictable proposition following quality runs mixed with a drug scandal, will race once more in the UK before a final decision is made about the first Tuesday in November.
Estimate ran second in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in 2013 and was second this year, but subesquently returned a positive test for morphine, along with five other horses.

A displcinary hearing is scheduled for September 25 where the British Horseracing Authority will submit that the positive tests were a result of contaminated feed and while the horses should be disqualified from the event, but no financial penalty imposed.
If the mare goes into quarantine, the Victoria Racing Club will issue an invitation to the Queen to attend Flemington to see only her second runner in the race.
Arabian Story finished sixth at $26 in 1997.
Although there are three more international nominations than last year, Racing Victoria scout Leigh Jordan said he believed six to eight would start in the race. Nine foreign-trained runners started last year.
The 148 nominations is down from 253 in 2010, but officials believe that is because local and international owners recognise how difficult it is to gain a start and don’t nominate unless they have a genuine chance.
Notable among international entrants is the return of Japanese runners for just the second time since Delta Blues and Pop Rock quinellaed the race in 2006.
Admire Rakti and Bande enter quarantine this week and will be certain arrivals.
British warrior and crowd favourite Red Cadeaux will appear for his fourth successive Melbourne Cup tilt, having finished second in 2011 and 2013.
Irish legend and dual Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Dermot Weld has nominated Lonsdale Cup victory Pale Mimosa.
Germany is likely to have a presence for the first time since 2001 with rising star Protectionist and last year’s German Derby winner Lucky Speed.

Vintage Crop (Dermot Weld, 1993), Media Puzzle (Dermot Weld, 2002), Delta Blues (Katsuhiko Sumii, Japan, 2006), Americain (Alain de Royer Dupre, France, 2010) and Dunaden (Mikel Delzangles, France, 2011) are the international visitors to have triumphed in the Cup.
The locals will put up resistance with 117 nominations, headed by Lloyd Williams-owned 2012 champion Green Moon, who is one of 12 nominations, which also includes last season’s Caulfield Cup winner Fawkner.
The Cup favourite is The Offer, trained by Gai Waterhouse who won the race last year with Fiorente.
La Amistad, the three-quarter sister to the Melbourne Cup’s only three-time winner Makybe Diva, has been entered by Team Hawkes.
Cups legend Bart Cummings, who now trains in partnership with his grandson James, has entered Precedence, a three-time Cup veteran, his only chance for a 13th Cup win.
Weights for the Melbourne Cup will be released on Tuesday, September 16, with first acceptances taken on Tuesday, October 7.
