Does it matter if the majority of sport nuts and sport customers are passive consumers, also known as couch potatoes? Photo: Paul Rovere
Melbourne is the sporting capital of the world! Is it really? Victorians pride themselves on being mad sport followers. It has been argued that Melburnians would pay money to witness a competitive grass-growing contest at the MCG. Internationally however, opinions remain divided.
Melbourne has been named the Ultimate Sport City three times by Sport Business International - a London-based authoritative sport business publication.
This year Melbourne won the title in the large city category and listed second in the overall rankings behind London. However, Sportcal - a London-based sport marketing intelligence agency - provides a city ranking in which Melbourne only features at position 36.
This rather disappointing ranking derives from the limited number of international high-profile sporting events that come to Melbourne. Admittedly, Sportcal does not (yet) include annual global events such as the Australian Open and the Australian Grand Prix.
