RECORD-breaking temperatures have swept Victoria as the state shivers through another freezing morning.

The mercury dropped to 1.8C in Melbourne, making it the coldest two consecutive mornings for 17 years after temperatures got down to 1.4C yesterday.

“For two days in a row it hasn’t been this cold since August 1997, when the 4th was 0.3C and the 5th was 0.8C,” Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Richard Russell said.

By 7.15am, it was 1.8C in Melbourne but it felt more like -2.3C with wind chill.

Early risers are warned to pull on a few extra layers to buffer against widespread frost.

The cold snap saw temperatures drop below zero in some of Melbourne’s outer suburbs.

At 7.30am it was -2C in Croydon, -2.9C in Coldstream, -0.7C at Viewbank and -1.2C at Avalon Airport.

In regional cities, early morning temperatures dropped as low as -4.1C in Ballarat, -3.8C in Bendigo and -2.8C in Shepparton.

But the cold shouldn’t last long.

Temperatures are set to rise to 15C in Melbourne by this afternoon with sun and north to north-westerly winds below 20km/h.

Today’s chilly start comes after Melbourne saw its coldest morning in 16 years yesterday. Temperatures plummeted to 1.4C, equalling the most recent coldest morning on record, on June 18, 1998.
