THIS is Melbourne’s median priced house.
It recently sold for $590,000. It has four bedrooms, an open-plan kitchen, good-sized living room and it presents well. There’s even a large garden and a shed.
It’s in Rowville. On the other side of EastLink from Melbourne.
But there’s a big wide-world outside of Melbourne where $590,000 or thereabouts can buy you all manner of properties. Among them are the kind of homes many of us have dreamt about at one point or another.
Chateaus in France, beachfront apartments in Spain, a luxury house in a South African golfing estate, a getaway on an Italian island, even an English pub with a home upstairs.
In this week’s Dream Homes we’ve had a look at what’s on offer around the world that won’t break the budget of a median-priced homebuyer in Melbourne.
San Pantaleo, Sardinia — Italy
At just $508,200 (AUD) this semi-detached house in an artists’ village on the Italian island of Sardinia is a steal by Melbourne standards.
It’s a short trip from Porto Cervo, but the town of San Pantaleo is a sleepy hamlet.
Locals are known for their artistry in a range of fields including wrought ironwork and painting.
Spread over two floors in this house, is a living room, kitchen and terrace upstairs plus a pair of rooms, a bathroom and patio downstairs.
Jelena Cvjetkovic from Savills Residential International is selling this affordable Italian getaway.
On a block spanning more than 4000sqm, this Florida home comes with a range of luxury appointments, despite its asking price of just $534,000 (AUD).
The entrance features grand columns and double doors that lead into a series of Italian tiled living areas. There’s a formal living room with a fireplace, built-in book shelves and a bay window. Four bedrooms are spread across the two-level home, which also features a kitchen with stainless-steel appliances and a breakfast room.
There’s also a pool outside and paved roof-covered entertainment areas.

Mayenne, Pays de la Loire — France
For those who dream of getting away from it all, an ancient mill on a rivers edge in a valley about 250km west of Paris may sound like heaven.
But it’s the price tag that is heavenly, roughly $536,500 (AUD) — more than $50,000 less than Melbourne’s median house.
So what do you get for your money? Three buildings for starters.
The main building has living spaces over two levels includes an open-plan dining room and sitting room that opens onto a terrace by French doors, as well as a kitchen and study. Upstairs there are two bedrooms and the bathroom.
A secondary house comes with a living room, bedroom, bathroom and wine cellar on the bottom floor, as well as two further bedrooms and another bathroom upstairs.
The last building is a former horse stalls, and has shed space and attics.

Paarl, Boland, Western Cape — South Africa
Set in a safety and security conscious South African golf estate the house has luxury appointments and views of the Boschenmeer Golf Estate fairway.
The house has an under cover patio, gardens and pool outside. Inside there is an entry hall, multiple living areas with fireplaces and an indoor entertaining area.
It also has a large wine cellar.
The 833sq m house sits in the Paarl Valley, an area outside of cape town known for its winemaking and close to the Berg River — and close to the freeway back into Cape Town.
With a roughly $593,540 (AUD) price attached to it this is effectively what the Melbourne median priced house will buy you in South Africa.
Jelena Cvjetkovic from Savills Residential International has the listing.
Estepona, Costa del Sol — Spain
At just over $600,000 (AUD) this apartment is ever so slightly pricier than a median priced house in Melbourne.
But with three bedrooms and set in a resort-style gated community on the southern coast of Spain with stunning views of the Mediterranean, Gibraltar and the North African coast in the distance, it could well be worth it.
The property also comes with access to a range of communal amenities including two pools, tennis courts a children’s playground and it sits on the beach.
In addition to the bedrooms the apartment has two bathrooms, a living and dining room, terrace and an underground garage car park.
It’s also about a 10 minute walk from Puerto Banus.
Alfonso Munoz and Jelena Cvtjetkovic from Savills Residential International are handling the sale of the apartment, should you be interested.
Built in 1880 and set on a 2,200sq m allotment including a 600sq m orchard, the property is currently being used as a bed and breakfast.
It has been renovated and has a pair of two-bedroom suites, and a further two bedrooms as the main accommodation of the property.
There is also a circular dining room, kitchen, games room, conservatory a 55sq m cellar and two halls — including tower rooms.
It’s located in a village set on a river about 12km from the Niort to the west of France.
The price? About $673,430 (AUD).
A little more than the Melbourne median house price — but it’s a bargain price, according to the team at FrenchEntree property sales.

Lasham, Alton, Hampshire — England
Many of us have dreamt about owning a pub.
For those who have dreamt of living in the English countryside as well, this place has you covered.
Downstairs is the Royal Oak, with a traditional public bar and a restaurant with seating for about 32 patrons around a cosy fireplace, a beer cellar and a large kitchen.
Upstairs the living accommodation includes three bedrooms, a living room, its own kitchen, bathroom.
There’s also a beer garden at the front of the property with room for 60 patrons.
At about $878,000 (AUD) this isn’t exactly the same price as a median priced house in Melbourne. But the pub generates more than $10,500 per week at the moment — in the past it has had revenue of up to $647,000 (AUD) per year.
Location wise, the small village of Lasham is considered affluent, and sits a short distance from Basingstoke, southwest of London.
Richard Acton from Savills, Southampton is selling the pub.
Carbisdale Castle, Sutherland — Scotland
This one might break your budget, but it would be worth it.
With an approximately $1.951 million (AUD) price tag it’s likely most of us will only ever dream of owning such a property, but for those living in Melbourne’s affluent suburbs of Brighton or Toorak and thinking of selling — it may be an option.
As castle’s go, it’s relatively new — built between 1906 and 1917 for the Duchess of Sutherland.
It’s been updated since then, after severe weather caused damage a number of structural, plumbing and electrical improvements were made, though some parts need additional work.
Marketing material from Savills hints it was built as a snub to the Duchess’ former in-laws with the clock tower deliberately aimed to face away from the estates of her former family following the death of her husband the third Duke. She didn’t want to give them the time of day.
Carbisdale Castle spreads over five floors including sub-basement and basement levels.
The upper floors have been run as a hostel with 40 bedrooms in the past, and also include a pair of galleries, a number of public rooms and an assortment of smaller rooms.
The castle is surrounded by formal grounds, but a separate allotment of land with a small loch is included in the price.
Carl Warden and Moira Webley from the Savills office in Perth, Perthshire, have the listing.
