Strong winds are expected to build to potentially dangerous gusts across Melbourne today.
A severe weather warning has been issued for Melbourne and the Wimmera, North Central, North East, South West, Central and West and South Gippsland forecast areas.
Northerly winds are expected to reach 40-60 km/h this afternoon with damaging peak gusts of up to 100 km/h tonight.
The weather bureau says winds around Melbourne Airport have already reached up to 70 kilometres an hour.
But senior forecaster Dean Stuart from the Bureau of Meteorology says the wind is set to get stronger "somewhere around 10 or 11pm tonight".
"It's possible anywhere in the Melbourne area to have strong gusts," he said.
The late winds could be accompanied by rain after a dry day.
