Snow could continue to fall in parts of outer Melbourne into the night as a wintry blast hit the state, bringing extreme weather warnings with it.

There have been reports of snow in Montrose, near Mount Dandenong, and in Woodend, near the Macedon ranges on Thursday.

Around Victoria, snow has been reported in the Yarra Valley, Trentham and in the Otways.

Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Stuart Coombs said snow could continue to fall in the Dandenongs overnight with temperatures dipping to three of four degrees in the outer suburbs of Melbourne and close to zero in other parts of the state.
