It was shortly before midnight on Friday and the scene at Melbourne airport was the same you would see any night.

There was a crowd at international arrivals waiting for family and friends. One person held a bright "Welcome" banner; another held balloons; and one man, who stood just about as close you could get to the Customs doors, anxiously held a bunch of roses and chocolates.

But it was different tonight.

Malaysian Airlines flight 129 from Kuala Lumpur was the connecting plane that many of the Victorians killed on flight MH17 should have been on.
