WE’RE not kitten around — Melbourne has a cat cafe and it’s pawsome.
Next Wednesday, Australia’s first cat cafe will throw open its doors, promising plenty of feline fun.
A dozen cuddly cats have moved into the homely cafe in Melbourne’s CBD, just around the corner from the Queen Victoria Market.
The site used to be home to an Indian restaurant but will now offer cat lovers the chance to have coffee and cake, before enjoying a pat with their new furry friends.
Founders Anita and Myles Loughran have been hard at work preparing the building, which is filled with toys, blankets and — in what was a particularly smart move — lint rollers.
The preparations even included weekly injections for Ms Loughran, who is allergic to cats.
But they have taken a liking to their new owners and their new home, and Ms Loughran said the cats loved the attention.
Visits start at $10 per hour and Ms Loughran said interest in the cafe was booming.
She said she had received emails from some “real quirky people”, including one woman who wanted to visit in her own catsuit, but the cafe would be “a place they can express themselves”.
A successful Indiegogo crowd-funding campaign made the cafe a reality after the Loughrans were inspired by a visit to a cat cafe in Japan.
