Victoria Police homicide detectives have identified a suspect in the death of a Chinese hospitality worker whose body was found in the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne on Saturday.

Police say Scott Allen Miller, 42, was known to police in Western Australia and moved to Melbourne six weeks ago.

They seized a number of items at the scene which lead them to believe Miller was involved, but will not go into detail about what they are.

They think Miller may still be in the Melbourne CBD area and members of the public have been warned not to approach him.

Miller has been living rough in a rotunda not far from where the woman's naked body was found by a jogger behind the police memorial about 8:35am on Saturday.

Police have not contacted the woman's family yet.

They are not commenting on the cause of her death but they say she was probably on her way to work at a restaurant when she was attacked.

Police believe the woman was killed in the gardens and are not aware of any connection between her and Miller.
