Melbourne train passengers will no longer have an excuse to get someone off the phone.
Telstra and Optus have joined with the state government to offer full mobile coverage through Melbourne's city loop tunnel, as well as the Melbourne Central, Flagstaff, and Parliament underground stations.
Victorian premier Denis Napthine said the black spot cost Melbourne millions of dollars in lost productivity.
"It's the 21st century, we need full connectivity," Napthine told reporters on Monday.
Optus said that the rollout will be a two-step process with 3G and 4G services switched on later this year, and then expanding the network services and coverage on offer.
Optus and Telstra rolled out mobile coverage in the train tunnels in Sydney in 2012, after more than 16 years of attempts to get network cabling into the city loop. Vodafone followed the two telcos shortly after.
