Botanic Gardens death: Police search for homeless 'loner' wanted in connection ... - ABC Online

The man wanted over the killing of a woman in Melbourne's Royal Botanic Gardens over the weekend has been described as a homeless loner.

Homicide detectives identified Scott Allen Miller, 42, as a suspect in the death of a Chinese hospitality worker whose naked body was found on Saturday near the corner of St Kilda Road and Linlithgow Avenue at Southbank.

Victoria Police said Miller was known to police in Western Australia and moved to Melbourne six weeks ago.

It was believed he had been sleeping rough in a rotunda not far from where the woman's naked body was found by a jogger behind the police memorial about 8:35am (AEST) on Saturday.

Major Brendan Nottle from the Salvation Army said he first met Miller about two months ago.

"I would describe him as being a loner, he was very difficult to engage with when I first came into contact with him," he said.

"I was really going to work around trying to find him some accommodation because we're heading into a really cold Melbourne winter but he was not interested."

Major Nottle said Miller chose to stay in a dark and isolated area of the gardens.

"It's actually one of the locations where we go to engage with homeless people where I personally feel uncomfortable," he said.

Police believe the woman was killed in the gardens and are not aware of any connection between her and Miller.

They were also not commenting on the cause of her death but said she was probably on her way to work at a restaurant when she was attacked.

Police seized a number of items at the scene which lead them to believe Miller was involved, but will not go into detail about what they were.

They thought Miller might still be in the CBD, and members of the public had been warned not to approach him but to call triple-0 immediately.

Police said they had not contacted the woman's family yet.
