Bomb threat closes Melbourne freeway - Yahoo!7 News


A 35-year-old man has been arrested and the bomb squad has been deployed following a siege in Melbourne.




A major police incident is unfolding in inner Melbourne with the Bomb Squad closing the Monash Freeway.


Sunrise correspondent Rebecca Maddern is at the scene.

What's the latest?


AR Good morning, guys.


As you can probably see behind me, a very unfamiliar sight for this time of the morning - the Monash Freeway remains closed in both directions.


In the last 30 minutes or so, a 35-year-old Caulfield man has been taken into custody.


He is a truck driver.


Let me take you back to about 4:00 this morning, when this situation unfolded.


A truck, a prime mover without its trailer on the back, was travelling in the wrong direction on the Monash Freeway.


He was travelling outbound in the inbound lanes of the Monash Freeway.


Police have stopped him, but during that process, he's actually made a threat that he had a bomb on board.


So the Bomb Squad was called in, and then a siege situation, if you like, continued for about an hour or so.


As you can imagine, it was early, but there were still cars on the road at this time of the morning, so drivers were told to remain in their cars.


We believe, as I said, the man is in custody at the moment.


We believe the Bomb Squad is still inspecting that truck on the Monash Freeway at the moment, and at this stage, the Monash Freeway is closed between the Burnley Tunnel and all the way back to Warrigal Road.


That is a huge stretch of Road in Melbourne this morning, and one of the main arterials into the city.


It is already causing traffic chaos around this city.

We believe the Bomb Squad is still inspecting that, and there has been a huge exclusion zone set up around that.


They have been able to turn some drivers around, but some drivers, as you can imagine, are in big trucks, so
