Melbourne will see its first lunar eclipse in several years at sunset tonight.
The moon will rise completely eclipsed - most likely in a bright red colour - about 5.49pm.
It will then emerge from the earth's shadow about 6.24pm.
With clear skies predicted this evening, star-gazers are expected to be out in force.
Tanya Hill, Senior Curator for Astronomy at the Melbourne Planitarium, told 3AW Breakfast it's the first lunar eclipse since 2011.
"And from memory I think both of them were clouded out, so this is our first chance to see one in quite a while."
"Normally at this time of the month we'd be seeing a lovely bright full moon but, because the earth gets in the way, it blocks that sunlight and the moon will be plunged into darkness."
Ms Hill recommended finding a good position early.
"The most important thing is that you have a good view of the east," she said.
