The Good Friday seafood rush kicked off well before dawn as fishmongers flocked to the city's wholesale seafood market to stock up for a mammoth day of trading.
Barbara Konstas, chief executive officer of the Melbourne Seafood Centre, said at least 500 tonnes of produce was sold through the West Melbourne market this week as retailers stocked up for the Easter long weekend.
''On average we had 20 semi-trailers a day making deliveries and everything went, every type of fresh and frozen fish product was sold,'' she said.
Ms Konstas said the market opened its doors half an hour early - at 4am - on Thursday but that traders could barely keep up with demand.
