Melbourne factory fire under control - Yahoo!7 News

A large factory fire in Melbourne has been controlled, but continues to burn away.

There's been a chemical scare in Melbourne's south-east with residents warned to stay indoors as fire crews fight a huge factory blaze.

Christie Cooper is at the scene in Mordialloc.

Hello, Christie.

The fire is now under control?

Good morning, Ann.

Yes, it certainly is.

It's been a very tense morning here in Mordialloc, but the good news is, the fire is now out and the threat has passed.

Earlier today, however, it was a very different story - the blaze broke out at the Bolwell Fibreglass Company, a company which manufacturers fibreglass parts for cars and trucks.

That blaze has rapidly spread to two adjoining buildings, both owned by Bolwell.

30 staff were inside at the time.

I spoke to one of them, who said he was just 40m away from the fire, knowing full well just how flammable fibreglass is.

He's raced out of the building and, a short time later, heard a series of explosions from inside that factory.

This has seen enormous plumes of black smoke, containing a cocktail of chemicals, into atmosphere, which really concerned firefighters.

They sent out a warning to the community saying, "Shut your doors, shut your windows.

Close those vents and stay inside.

" The good news is, that threat has since passed.

Here's what the MFC had to say.

Carbon monoxide and chemicals are a concern.

Firefighters wear breathing apparatus to protect themselves from those chemicals of combustion.

The smoke dissipates into the environment.

We had area raids around the area to make sure those chemicals didn't get into our community.

Wells Road here remains closed.

Boundary Road has since reopened.

All schools in the area are operating as normal.
