Easter celebrations will be clouded as Melbourne experiences its coolest day of the year on Saturday, but conditions are ideal for the surfing world championship at Bells Beach.

Association of Surfing Professionals spokesman Steve Robertson said on Saturday morning that surfers were finally enjoying a good swell for the Rip Curl Pro.

"The waves at the moment are around 1.5 metres but they're expected to build to 2.5 metres this afternoon and remain really good for the event over the next few days," he said.

"The wind, which is really significant in the the quality of the waves – over the next few days we're expecting north west offshore winds and that should be ideal."
