The CBD's newest shopping centre, Emporium Melbourne, has opened its doors to a muted reception from Melburnians.

Although only half its 225 shops are open, the rest will follow in August when the Emporium launches its second stage.

At 8.30am on Wednesday, Melbourne's fashion elite mingled inside the VIP area, sampling black sugar doughnuts, mini deluxe burgers and Pellegrini mineral water, as a few hundred customers lined up outside the Lonsdale Street entrance.

Spread across seven levels and spanning the length of six football fields, Emporium Melbourne will house the largest collection of Australian designers under one roof, with high street fashion stores and a "cafe court" with upmarket food.
