A precautionary boil water notice has been issued for the city of Melbourne after a fire hydrant was hit by a vehicle, affecting nearly 12,000 homes.
City officials said the effect of the incident compromised the main which caused an eruption at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
The repair work caused the water line to become dislodged at a major water main.
Repairs are underway but break has caused very low to no water pressure in most of Melbourne's beachside water distribution system, the city said.
Officials said this affects customers on the beachside from the Pineda Causeway to East Eau Gallie Boulevard. The notice also affects numerous businesses, including Dunkin' Donuts.
"As a precaution, we advise that all water used for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, or washing dishes, be boiled," the city said in a statement. "A rolling boil of one minute is sufficient. As an alternative, bottled water may be used."
The precautionary boil water notice is expected to remain in effect until Friday. The city said it will be lifted when the required bacteriological survey shows that the water is safe to drink. Residents will be provided with a notification at that time.
