A man has been charged after a drone was found hovering over a Melbourne prison.

Police say the four-engine drone was seen over the Metropolitan Remand Centre at Ravenhall in Melbourne's west on Sunday about 4:30pm (AEDT).

Officers say the drone was allegedly used in an attempt to smuggle drugs into the remand centre.

A 28-year-old Lalor man has been charged with an attempt to commit an indictable offence and possessing a drug of dependence.

The man was bailed and will appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court next week.
