For suburbs struggling with love, the macho Aussie male may be to blame, according to Relationships Australia.

“The ocker belief or norm that a real Aussie male is tough and doesn’t show or reveal vulnerability influences and inhibits the depth of intimacy that can be experienced in relationship,” said relationship educator Ruth Taylor.

Ms Taylor said trust, respect and support are the key to a loving relationship. But friendship is most important ingredient.

“Couples who related to their partner as their friend are more able to deal with the difficult issues of life and maintain a strong, loving and lasting relationship,” she said.

Those who are lucky enough to be in love aren’t afraid to show it online either, with a big spike in the number on mentions of Valentine’s Day on social media.

There’s been 57,921 tweets leading up to the holiday (last 30 days), with talks ranging from Valentine’s Day plans, to presents, to being single.

But notably, the majority of tweets are speaking positively about the day.

“Over the past 30 days, Valentine’s Day has been mentioned in close to 60,000 conversations on Twitter in Australia. So if you are looking for the perfect gift, the answer is already out there”. Online Circle Digital lead strategist Lucio Ribeiro said.

Successful couples look for opportunities to express appreciation, fondness and admiration for each other, which includes Valentine’s Day, an opportunity to “put extra positives” into an already strong relationship.

“They are on the alert for moments to give attention and connect with their partner,” Ms Taylor said.

But while Valentine’s Day is usually a day for those in love, some singles try to get in the action.

Last year one per cent of Valentine’s customers sent flowers anonymously to themselves.

Florists are expecting plenty of romance this year, with Mr White predicting a 34 per cent increase on sales from last 2013 and the traditional rose to be the big seller.

“We have tried other flowers but no one goes for them,” said Mr White. “Valentine’s Day is about roses, and they have to be red.”
