Melbourne man who killed son dies

A man shot by police after his son was killed at a cricket oval in Melbourne's southeast has died in hospital.

The 54-year-old Chelsea Heights man died in the Alfred Hospital at 1.30am (AEDT) on Thursday, a police spokeswoman said.

His 11-year-old son died from severe head injuries at the scene at the oval in Tyabb, near Hastings following the local club's cricket training.

Police say the man confronted officers with a knife when they arrived about 6.40pm (AEDT) on Wednesday.

The violence flared after the local club's cricket training had finished and police are urging anyone who saw what happened to contact Crime Stoppers.

Young children are among the witnesses with whom police are speaking.

Southern Metro regional commander Doug Fryer said four police officers attempted to talk the man down and discharged capsicum spray before shooting him once in the chest.

Homicide squad investigating with oversight from Professional Standards Command.
