HOUSES shook and residents were rattled as a 2.7 magnitude earth tremor hit Melbourne's outer east this afternoon.
Geosciences Australia confirmed there was an earthquake which had its epicentre near Bayswater just before 4pm.
The bang was so loud that some residents mistook the tremor for an explosion.
Ferntree Gully man Bill Ireland told the Herald Sun he thought an aeroplane had hit his house.
"It was a bang that sounded like an explosion. I have felt some earthquakes before but this one must have been massive. The whole place just shuttered I thought something had collided with the house."
While Rhonda Morrissey in Dandenong North said the quake had shaken her house but not dislodge any furniture.
"To us it just sounded and felt like a large truck was coming past the house. It was enough to shake the house but everything is still in place."
The State Emergency Service (SES) said there were no reports of damage.
Spokesman
Stefan Delatovic said residents should only call triple-0 or the SES hotline if ther was damage to property or injury.
Dozens of Herald Sun readers have described the feeling when the tremor hit their area.
"It happened just down the road from me, felt like the house lifted and was dropped back down. It woke up my newborn baby and scared the kids," Jennifer Ball wrote on the Herald Sun Facebook page.
"I'm in Pakenham, and it felt a short sharp boom like something heavy hitting the side of the house," Robyn Raven said.
"Yes I felt it in Mulgrave," Jenny Parker said.
"I felt quite a rumble felt in Belgrave," Katrina Stephenson said.
"My entire house shook here in Ferntree Gully," Elizabeth Tucker said.
More to come ...
