ABOUT 300 diners evacuated after the iconic Melbourne restaurant the Stokehouse in St Kilda was engulfed in flames.
Up to 15 fire crews responded to the blaze at the restaurant on Jacka Blvd at 11.15pm on Friday.

The restaurant was fully alight when crews arrived on scene and the heat was so strong bystanders were blocked off hundreds of meters from the scene.

The fire was so intense it took more than three hours for the 70 firefighters to bring it under control.
Crews were still on scene early this morning.
3AW reports the fire was believed to have started in the kitchen area and that the blaze has caused up to an estimated $1m in damage.
No one was injured in the blaze.
