THE peak horse trials event on the Victorian calendar has just become the richest in the state with a $50,000 prize purse.
What was the Melbourne International three-day event has a new name.
As part of a new event management deal, the 57-year-old event will now be known as the Melbourne International Horse Trials.
On Monday, Equestrian Victoria announced an agreement with private events company Nodding Horse to run the event at Werribee Park from June 6-9.
Event director Michael Hand, a veteran of major international sporting events, said the MIHT would be Victoria's premier sporting and social event on the Queen's Birthday weekend.
``We aim to build on what has become a spectacular long weekend of entertainment at the idyllic Werribee Park precinct,'' he said.
``The MIHT provides visitors with a full weekend of entertainment, where they can enjoy the action at Werribee National Equestrian Centre and at the heritage listed Victoria state rose garden, Werribee Park Mansion and Werribee Open Range Zoo'', Mr Hands said.
The revamped cross-country course for the MIHT will be designed by Ewan Kellet.
``As a long-time participant, I am excited by the opportunities the partnership will bring to the Melbourne International Horse Trials and the wider equestrian community,'' three-time Olympian, international judge and EV chairman Barry Roycroft said.
