Two bodies have been found inside a Melbourne house, with police treating the deaths as suspicious.

A COUPLE found dead in their home in Melbourne's northeast have been described as "inseparable" as grieving family and friends try to understand their shock deaths.

Police were called to the Ramu Parade property in Heidelberg West just after 7pm yesterday after a concerned relative contacted them.

Officers discovered the bodies of a 50-year-old woman named Katrina and 47-year-old man named Chris in separate rooms.

Police are not looking for any suspects and have not ruled out a murder-suicide.

In a statement through police, family said the couple, who they wished to only release their first names, were happily married.

"Christopher and Katrina were a happily married couple who cared very deeply for each other," they said.

"Our families are deeply saddened by these tragic events."

Christopher's concerned mother raised the alarm after she hadn't heard from the couple, and knocks to the door and windows of their home were not answered.

She questioned neighbour and long-time family friend Lynda McDonald as to whether she'd seen them, before they called police last night.

It is unknown how long the bodies were in the house, but neighbours said they hadn't seen the pair for four days.

"I'm just in shock," Mrs McDonald, who had lived next to the couple for more than 15 years, said.

"They were a lovely couple. They were inseparable.

"Usually they are always out the back having a barbecue, or we have a chinwag over the fence while putting the washing out, but I hadn't seen Katrina since Wednesday.

"Because we had the four hot days, we just thought they'd been hibernating in the house, like we had been.

"It's just too much to handle. I really have no idea what has happened.

"When we last spoke, she was joking about how she had to lose wait.

"She was a chatty little thing. You could stand and talk to her for hours.

"It's just out of the blue."

Homicide squad detectives are waiting for the results of a post-mortem to determine the cause of their deaths.

Chris and Katrina both suffered medical conditions and were on disability pensions.

They are understood to have an 11-year-old daughter, who is in the care of her grandparents.

The "happy-go-lucky" couple were last seen waiting outside their home on Friday afternoon to be picked up by a family member for their weekly outing to Preston market.

But it is believed when it got too hot, they returned inside.

When the relative arrived, his knocks were left unanswered, so he left a note on the doorstep, assuming they had gone out.

Neighbours Arthur and Dorothy Savage were shocked at the tragedy.

"It's hard to understand," Mr Savage said. "They were very friendly, very nice.

"They were totally together.

"They were always walking down the shops arm in arm.

"It's really sad."
