A man has been charged following a police pursuit that left five people injured in Melbourne's inner north on Monday morning.

A black BMW collided with a silver car at Yarra Bend Road in Northcote about 11:30am AEDT.

The crash ended a police pursuit that began when the BMW drove through a red light at Jeffrey Street.

Before launching the pursuit, police had followed the BMW after detecting it speeding. They said a motorcyclist then rode between the police car and BMW.

After the crash, one of the men in the BMW left the vehicle and jumped onto the back of the motorcycle.

Police have charged a 23-year-old man from Thomastown with offences including possessing a handgun and reckless conduct endangering life.

He has been bailed to appear in court at a later date.

Police also executed a search warrant at a property in Thomastown on Tuesday afternoon and recovered a stolen vehicle.

Investigators are still searching for the two men who left the crash scene on the motorcycle.

The male driver and only occupant of the silver car remains in the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Three passengers and the driver of the BMW were also injured in the crash.
