DREAMS were made and broken for thousands of Victorian school leavers as this year's VCE results were released.

The prestigious Melbourne Grammar School showed the way with five students achieving the maximum Australian Tertiary Admission Rank of 99.95.

And a Melbourne High School student aced the secondary certificate aged just 16.

Melbourne Grammar headmaster Roy Kelley said the school's stellar result, which included 25 students with a rank of 99 or above, was one of the best in years.

"I am especially proud of these boys that have achieved the highest possible score,'' Mr Kelley said.

"They've all still done their sport and arts, music - they haven't been workhorses at their desks.

"They've also been fully involved in the life of the school."

Four Mac. Roberston Girls' High School students achieved the same feat and 31 scored 99 or above.

Scotch College had three students with a perfect ranking and 25 perfect study scores.

Methodist Ladies' College, Xavier College, Mount Scopus Memorial College and Melbourne High School each had two students with the highest possible entrance rank.

Melbourne High principal Jeremy Ludowyke said one of its perfect scorers, 16-year-old Anuj Krishna, was the youngest in his year.

The select-entry school's median ATAR of 95.45 was the second-highest it has ever recorded.

Caulfield Grammar School, St Kevin's College, Presbyterian Ladies' College, University High and St Catherine's School each had one student with the maximum rank.

Top scores elsewhere included two students with 99.9 at Balwyn High, two with 99.5 at Bendigo Senior Secondary, 99.6 at both Braybrook College and Highvale Secondary, 99.45 at Melbourne Girls' College, 99.9 at Nossal High, 99.55 at St Albans Secondary, 99.45 at Frankston High, 99.85 at Yeshivah College, 99.85 at Strathcona Baptist Girls Grammar, 99.8 at both St Monica's College Epping and Lauriston Girls' School, 99.65 at Werribee Secondary, 99.45 at The Geelong College and 99.6 at Ballarat Clarendon College.

McKinnon Secondary, Benalla College, Mildura Secondary and Williamstown High also shone.

Sixty-eight of Victoria's highest achieving VCE students received scholarships to the University of Melbourne, providing guaranteed course entry, a HECS exemption and $5000 annual allowance.

St Catherine's School 18-year-old Saskia Holloway, among the recipients, was shocked to realise she received a ranking of 99.95.

"I was thrilled because everyone hopes all their hard work will pay off but you don't really expect it to happen to you," she said.

Higher Education and Skills Minister Peter Hall said there were a range of study options for those left disappointed.

"While excelling at VCE is a terrific achievement, great results are not the only measure of success," he said.
