POLICE are hunting a man who threw a Molotov cocktail inside an antique jewellery store in Melbourne's CBD.

Detectives have released CCTV footage of a man throwing the homemade firebomb inside

Bourke St store Kozminsky, which narrowly missed a customer and staff on December 17 at 3pm.

Owner of the family-owned store John Lonergan said there was no motive for the "bizarre act of violence".

"It could have been potentially hugely damaging. Luckily, we just got out of it very shocked," Mr Lonergan said.

"It's remarkable no damage was caused."

Security guard Frank Nesci managed to throw the explosive back onto the street and then extinguish it within seconds.

"All I heard was this flame noise like a whoosh then a loud bang," Mr Nesci said.

"It was just instinct to get it out of the shop before it went up and did a lot of damage."

His boss presented him with an antique pearl for his bravery.

Police have described the male offender as caucasian, aged in his 40s or 50s and about 170cm tall with dark hair.

He was wearing blue jeans and a brown, possibly leather jacket, brown leather shoes and was carrying a maroon/red-coloured backpack.

Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au.
