Elephant calf Sanook has died overnight suddenly at the Melbourne Zoo.

Zoo staff discovered the calf on Wednesday morning but found no signs of trauma.

In a statement, Melbourne Zoo said Sanook was observed to be playing energetically and suckling from mother Num-Oi as usual on Tuesday, with "no indication of any illness".

Sanook was baby of the elephant herd and the youngest of three calves born at the zoo. He would have been one year old in January.

A postmortem will be carried out on Wednesday to seek the cause of death.
