THE troubled Docklands wheel will open this month, almost five years after it was closed due to major structural faults.

And ticket prices for a 30-minute ride will range from $19 for a child under 15 to $82 for a family of four.

Melbourne Star Observation Wheel Management Group CEO Chris Kelly confirmed there would be a December opening.

"We are now well into the commissioning process, which is the final stage before opening, but some activities do remain weather dependent," he said.

"The message at the moment is 'watch this space'."

The Herald Sun revealed in October that the wheel's Japanese owner Sanoyas Rides wanted the attraction to open this year in time for the holidays.

Sanoyas, which also rebuilt the wheel, bought it from ING Real Estate for an undisclosed sum.

The original ride opened in December 2008 but was closed after 40 days due to cracks.

Mr Kelly revealed that a ticket for an adult and two children will cost $56, and a family ticket for two adults and two children will be $82.

"Single adults will be able to experience the Melbourne Star for $32, and a single ticket for a child aged 5 to 15 will cost $19," he said.

"The 30-minute Melbourne Star ride, during which our guests will enjoy views of up to 40km, will be complemented by information and stories about Melbourne that will inform and surprise locals and visitors alike."

Views from the 120m-high attraction will extend as far as Mt Macedon, Arthur's Seat and the Dandenongs.

The Melbourne Star is double the height of the West Gate Bridge carriageway and equivalent to a 40-storey building.
