MELBOURNE, Fla. —
A man accused of shooting at Melbourne police is in custody.
Clifford Long, 25, is accused pointing a gun at cops in Melbourne in July and shooting at an officer last month on Juanita Circle. He was arrested Friday night.
"An individual willing to pull a firearm or shoot at a police officer, there's no telling what they're willing to do to someone else," Sgt. Sheridan Shelley of Melbourne police said.
Long allegedly opened fire on an 11-year veteran cop who was investigating the area known for illegal activity.
The sergeant shot back but neither was hit in the exchange, according to police.
Shelley spoke about the incident in July.
"There was a foot pursuit at which time he brandished a firearm and began to turn with a gun in hand," Shelley said. "Fortunately he tripped over a curb and dropped the firearm."
After getting tips from citizens, the Melbourne man was taken in by a special task force put together to get Brevard's most wanted off the streets.
The task force arrested Long at the Shull Manor apartments, the same complex where he allegedly pulled a gun on Melbourne officers four months earlier.
Police said it's a concerning pattern for them and the community and they're just glad he's back behind bars.
"It's a good spot for where this person is today, off the street where no one can be injured," Shelley said.
Police said Long went into custody peacefully.
He's being held without bond until his next court hearing in January.
