Detectives have released more CCTV footage regarding a sexual assault in South Melbourne.

A SKATEBOARDING sex fiend sat on his young victim and demanded she hand over her phone and wallet before assaulting her in a South Melbourne car dealership, fresh CCTV footage has revealed.

Police released portions of the footage this morning in hope of tracking down the attacker, who is believed to be of Asian appearance.

Sexual Crimes Squad Detective Leading Snr Constable Anthon Bennett said the vision showed the man stalked his 24-year-old victim after she left an Albert Rd venue between 2.30am and 3am on December 7.

He said the man walked "about a minute and a half" behind the woman as she trekked "some distance" along the road to a car dealership on Kings Way.

"(He) caught up with her about 50m along Kings Way," Det Leading Snr Constable Bennett said.

"He then walked side by side with her, having a conversation with her. He was very friendly.

"She was on the phone at the time, not paying much attention."

Det Leading Snr Constable Bennett said the man kept walking towards the city when the woman stopped at the dealership to continue talking on her phone.

But the attacker then doubled back, put down his skateboard and crept through the dealership behind the woman.

He put his hand over her mouth and dragged her back inside.

"He initially sat on her and demanded her mobile telephone, and went through her bag and her wallet," Det Leading Snr Constable Bennett said.

"Then the sexual assault took place.

"He pinned her down for almost 10 minutes. She struggled the whole time and quite bravely fought him off."

The man then fled back through the dealership with his victim's credit card after he being startled by a passing vehicle.

The credit card has not yet been recovered or used.

The man was last seen near Jane Bell Lane, off Russell St in the Melbourne CBD, after travelling to the Princes St Bridge, north up Swanston St and along Lonsdale St after the incident.

Det Leading Snr Constable said the man, who told the victim he was an international student from Argentina, could be living in that area.

But it is not known whether he is still in Melbourne, or the country.

Police believe drivers passing through the area may have vital information.

A number of calls made to Crime Stoppers have already been useful in helping discover his identity.

Det Leading Snr Constable Bennett said the victim was "travelling well", but still dealing with emotional trauma from the incident.

He said the incident could have been much worse.

"There was the potential for anything to occur," he said.

"There was very little pedestrian traffic and vehicles passing by at speed."

The man is described as Asian, aged in his late teens to mid 20s, slim build and is about 165cm tall.

He was wearing a grey hooded top with large white lettering, light blue pants/jeans, white Nike runners and a black baseball cap with white motif.

He was carrying a black Nike back pack with large white Nike letters and a black skateboard.
