A truck driver has been taken to hospital after a semi-trailer slammed into a bridge and rolled onto its side in South Melbourne.

Emergency services are currently on the scene, at the intersection of City Road and Ferrars Street, a notorious section of road that has seen two other trucks overturn at the same spot since 2010.

The male driver of the truck was freed from the big rig and was taken to The Alfred hospital shortly before midday.

The man was conscious and breathing, according to an Ambulance Victoria spokesman.

Two lanes of City Road are closed westbound, leading to the West Gate Bridge.

In November 2010, three people were injured after a truck collided with the same bridge - which services the 96 light rail- and rolled onto a car, trapping the occupants.

In March, the same year, a woman was nearly killed after a truck carrying weed-killer and other hazardous chemicals hit the same bridge and tipped over.

The impact caused the truck to topple over, spill its cargo and "demolish" half the woman's car.

Motorists in the area are advised to allow extra time or seek an alternate route.
