PAINT brushes were never going to cut it for a canvas this big.

Melbourne artist Ash Keating instead filled 25 fire extinguishers with paint to create a giant artwork on the side of the National Gallery of Victoria.

He arrived at 5.30am today and by noon he had transformed a grey wall into a vibrant spray of colours reflecting an Australian sunset.

The 19m x 7.5m painting marked the start of Melbourne Now, an exhibition celebrating the city's contemporary artists and the biggest undertaking in the gallery's history.

Keating is one of more than 400 artists to have created 170 project showcasing the latest in Melbourne art, design, architecture, fashion and performance.

"It's a fantastic exhibition and it's long overdue that the gallery opens its doors to the amazing talent this city has across all artforms," Keating said.

An extensive program of entertainment, talks, workshops and children's events will complement the free exhibition, which is spread across the NGV's two buildings on St Kilda Rd and Federation Square.

Melbourne Now runs until March 23. For details download the app or visit ngv.vic.gov.au
