Excessive flooding has forced the closure of one of the city's busiest train stations during peak hour as Melbourne's rail network woes continue into a second day.

Metro Trains spokeswoman Larisa Tait said that Melbourne Central station would be closed on Thursday morning until further notice because of safety concerns caused by “excessive flooding” at the station.

“It is possibly a burst water main or broken pipe,” she said.

“It's not clear at this stage but the leak appears to be in the roof above platforms one and two.”

Ms Tait said commuters would be unable to use the station until the damage was repaired and the water cleared.

City Loop services were still running despite the leak, with Metro advising commuters travelling to Melbourne Central to get off at Flagstaff or Parliament stations and take alternative transport.

Yarra Trams advised there would be delays on city trams due to the increased volume of passengers caused by Melbourne Central station's closure.

Meanwhile, a train fault was causing delays for commuters on the Werribee, Glen Waverley and Frankston lines about 7.15am.

The early morning issues follow major disruptions on the city's rail network throughout Wednesday, starting just before 1pm when a woman was hit by a train at West Richmond station.

A few hours later train services were cancelled on a stretch of the Frankston line after a car collided with a train at a level crossing.

The last incident caused delays on a number of lines just before peak hours when overhead power was lost along a key train route in the city.
