Massive fire has damaged the Melbourne Fruit, Vegetable and Flower Market on ... - Herald Sun

A MASSIVE fire broke out at the Melbourne Fruit, Vegetable and Flower Market last night.

Multiple fire crews rushed to the market, on Footscray Rd, after it caught ablaze at 8pm.

MFB commander Frank Stockton said the fire was based in a cool room on the ground floor.

"The roof of the cool room has collapsed with extensive fire damage to the associated electrical equipment and machinery," he said.

"Structural fire damage has been minimal and confined to the immediate area surrounding the cool room.

"It was important to ensure that the remainder of the cool rooms continued to function to protect large quantities of stock contained within them, which was achieved."

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
