Kiwi feared drowned in Melbourne - 3News NZ

A New Zealander is feared drowned after being swept out to sea from a beach near Melbourne.

The man, in his 20s, had been standing with friends on rocks at Pearse's Beach, on the Mornington Peninsula, when two of them fell into the water.

Australian media are reporting the man jumped into the water to rescue his friend, however as he tried to climb to safety a wave swept him back out to sea.

His friends called emergency services, however a five-hour sea search failed to find any trace of the young man, thought to be a student.

Sgt Danny Lean told The Australian the incident was a tragedy.

"These young men are obviously traumatised. They've lost their friend right in front of their eyes," he said.

It is now said to be a recovery operation and the beach has been closed to the public.

Officers are trying to contact his family in New Zealand.
