Melbourne trades pick 2 for GWS youngster Dom Tyson and later draft selections - Herald Sun

Jon Anderson and Sam Edmund give their verdict on Melbourne’s big move to trade pick 2 in the draft for Dom Tyson

MELBOURNE has parted with the second pick in this year's national draft, acquiring highly-rated midfielder Dom Tyson from the Greater Western Sydney Giants.

As part of the deal, Melbourne gives up picks 2, 20 and 72 but receives picks 9 and 53 in the draft.

"We’ve been able to bring in a class midfielder in Tyson, and improve our second draft selection from pick 20 to pick 9 in what we see as a fairly even draft. We have also been able to improve our pick 72 to pick 53, so the net effect of the deal is very positive for the Melbourne Football Club," Demons football manager Josh Mahoney said.

"Dom is a tall midfielder who is exceptional around the stoppages and has a unique ability to find a gap in traffic. He is strong overhead, he has good touch and depth with his kicking.

While they didn't land the big name fish they may have been looking for, they did recruit a player many believe can develop into a future star - and one who will further add to Paul Roos' midfield stocks.

Tyson, selected with pick 3 in the 2011 national draft, impressed in his first season with the Giants, playing 10 matches, before a knee injury restricted him to three games in 2013.

With the Giants now boasting the first two picks in the national draft, attention will turn to whether GWS will look to trade the coveted No.1 selection.

Key forward Tom Boyd is widely tipped as the no.1 player in this year's draft pool, but with the Giants already possessing young key forwards Jeremy Cameron and Jonathan Patton, the AFL's newest club may look to trade the first pick.

All Australian midfielder Nick Dal Santo has joined North Melbourne on a 3-year deal. Paul Chapman has signed with Essendon and James Podsiadly will move to Adelaide to join the Crows.

GWS has said it is willing to trade pick 1 but it would take a hugely attractive offer from a rival club for the Giants to part with the pick.
