A heat wave has struck southern Australia, bringing 30-degree-plus temperatures to Victoria and New South Wales.

Melbourne will reach 30 degrees today and Mildura 35. On Thursday, Sydney is tipped to get to 37 and Bourke, in New South Wales's north-west, is forecast to reach 40.

"A 30-degree day is rare early in the month but it certainly has happened before," Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Peter Blake said.

Mr Blake said northerly winds would blow hot inland air over the two states.

"The temperature inland is quite high," he said.

"There's exceptionally warm air over parts of South Australia. It's a warm air mass. It's very warm and dry over the head of the bight."

It's the first day over 30 degrees for Melbourne since March 27, Mr Blake said.

Mildura, meanwhile, hit 31 degrees earlier this month, 33 degrees in September, and 38 degrees in October last year.

Melbourne will cool to 22 degrees on Thursday and 19 degrees on Friday, with showers forecast for both days.
