In-demand assistant coach Stuart Dew has turned his back on overtures from Melbourne to sign a new three-year deal with Sydney.

Dew had been sought by the Demons to fill the coveted senior assistant role under Paul Roos from next year, but the move was blocked by the Swans, who demanded he fulfill the last year of his previous contract that ran through to the end of the 2014 season.

As part of Melbourne's succession plan, Dew would have been in line to take over from Roos as senior coach as early as the 2016 season, but the former Hawthorn assistant coach instead chose to re-commit to senior coach John Longmire and the Swans.

"Stu has been a valuable member of our coaching team since 2010 and is someone we rate really highly," Longmire told Sydney's official website.

"We understand that there were other club's interested in Stu, but to have him re-commit to the club is a strong show of faith in the Swans' football program.

"We're glad Stuey has confidence that the Swans will continue to assist his development as a coach."

The deal will also see Dew take on the new role of strategy and midfield coach.
