Growth cap in 40-year Melbourne plan - 3AW (blog)

3AW News understands a new plan will include setting a permanent growth boundary identifying new sites for urban renewal and more work towards a third airport for the city.

A third airport in Melbourne's outer south-east is a major part of the Napthine government's 40-year plan for the city.

The Plan Melbourne blueprint, designed to take the city into the future, includes a permanent cap on Melbourne’s growth as well as more parks and open spaces.

The key points from the plan include:

- A cap on urban boundaries to stop urban sprawl

- Designated areas for high-rises in the metropolitan area

- Plans for a further airport possibly in Melbourne’s south-east

- Encouraging people to go to regional centres like Bacchus Marsh, Warragul, Kilmore and Wonthaggi

Minister Matthew Guy today launched the government's 40-year Plan Melbourne strategy to set the rules for fitting more than an extra one million people into the city by 2050.

In a bid to keep Melbourne one of the world's most liveable cities, new parks and more open space are a key part of the plan.

It is expected to use developer contributions to buy land for new parks.

Mr Guy told 3AW News there was a major focus on keeping the city liveable.

"High-rise, high-density development has a place," he said. "And those places are in either the central city area or in defined activity area.

"Other than that we're very keen to ensure that our city is protected and that it doesn't grow into a one-size-fits-all construction zone."
