Melbourne is set for another night of storms and showers, with similar falls to those of Wednesday night.

The city received 10.2 millimetres of rain in the 24 hours to 9am Thursday, with many suburbs – Scoresby, for example – getting nearly double that.

Phillip Island, South Gippsland and the Otways were drenched. Upper Lang Lang in South Gippsland received 108 millimetres, Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Terry Ryan said. Apollo Bay copped 52 millimetres and Rhyll, on Phillip Island, 56 millimetres.

Mr Ryan said the city could expect to get five to 10 millimetres of rain overnight on Thursday while the suburbs and country areas could expect 15 to 20 millimetres.

"Overall, falls won't be as heavy," Mr Ryan said. "They're also getting here quite late. It will be after dark when we get the first showers – after 9pm – and there will be storms as well."

VicRoads has issued traffic alerts for numerous roads on Phillip Island due to flooding. One road on the island – Pyramid Rock Road – is closed to traffic. A spokesman for VicRoads said it was unknown when the floods would subside given forecasts of further rain.

A spokesman for the State Emergency Service said there were 65 calls for assistance statewide after Wednesday's rain. He said 34 of those were in Melbourne, mostly for fallen trees and traffic hazards.

Despite the flooding on Phillip Island, he said, there were only three calls for assistance. Melbourne was expected to reach 18 degrees on Thursday, rising to 19 degrees on Friday and 22 degrees at the weekend.
