LABOR MP Michael Danby has retained the seat of Melbourne Ports.

Mr Danby has been re-elected with 55.28 per cent of the vote on a two-party preferred basis with 36 of 40 polling booths counted by this afternoon.

The seat has been held by Labor for more than 100 years, with Mr Danby elected in 1998.

He is fifth in a line of Labor MPs to hold the seat.

Liberal candidate Kevin Ekendahl who received 44.72 per cent of the vote said he was happy with the 2.61 per cent swing towards the party.

"I'm actually very happy with the result. I think it was a fantastic result for the Liberals. It also showed that the people of Melbourne Ports were very disappointed and showed their disappointment in the Labor Government," he said.

"I was very surprised by the overwhelming support that the people of Melbourne Ports had, with a strong swing for us."

Mr Ekendahl said he believed support of the Liberal Party was growing in Melbourne Ports.

The Greens were a strong contender, with Ann Birrell receiving 12,228 votes, a drop of only 0.01 per cent. Australian Sex Party's Melissa Star received 2,608 votes, followed by Palmer United Party's Toby Simon Stodart (722), DLP Democratic Labour's Vince Stefano (374), Family First Party's Robert Keenan (274) votes, Stable Population Party's Steven Armstrong, (224) and Rise Up Australia Party's Margaret Quinn (119).

Informal voting in Melbourne Ports increased by 0.67 per cent to 2363, which was higher than Victoria's overall figure of 4.95 per cent.
