Melbourne braces for storms, winds - Herald Sun

UPDATE: MELBOURNE commuters will battle rain and windy weather on their way home as wild storms sweep across Victoria.

The weather hit Melbourne's north at 2.30pm with reports of hail falling at Tullamarine and Mangalore Airport.

Mangalore Airport received 10mm of rain in just 15 minutes according to Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Michael Efron.

Meanwhile strong winds buffeted the state with a gust reaching 291km/h in the Grampians.

Mt Hotham clocked a top wind speed of 102km/h.

Despite the wild weather, SES reported only 20 calls statewide.

Mr Efron said showers and storms would sweep east.

"We will see this weather continue, there is the risk of thunderstorms but it is unlikely there will be anything big,'' he said.

"`They should ease in the early hours of Thursday.''

Isolated showers have been predicted for Melbourne tomorrow and top temperature of 18C.
