UPDATE: CitiPower says a Springvale transmission tower that lost supply is the cause of extensive blackouts across eastern and south-eastern Melbourne.
The power outage hit about 5.15pm, switching off traffic lights, forcing businesses to close and shutting down petrol pumps.
There were reports of no electricity at Noble Park, Brighton, Bentleigh, Glen Waverly, Forest Hill, Blackburn, Frankston, Hampton, Highett, Camberwell and Box Hill.
CitiPower says as many as 11,800 customers were affected.
It's believed most areas have had powered restored, although 3AW has heard reports of "flickering" in Hampton.
However, the power outage has affected the Sandringham train line.
Metro Trains says the line has been suspended between Elsternwick and Sandringhman. Replacement buses are on the way.
They say the cause of the outage is still not known.
VicRoads says about fifty of its sites were affected.
Callers to the Drive program described the blackout as "scary", "eerie" and "like a zoo".
VicRoads urges drivers to take extra care on the roads where there are no signals, although power has been restored to most traffic lights.
