Arson squad investigates cause of fatal house fire in Melbourne - Yahoo!7 News

Arson squad detectives will spend the morning investigating the cause of a unit fire that has left two people dead in Melbourne's west.

The bodies of a man and a woman were found by fire crews in a house at Deer Park.

Nearby residents reported hearing a large explosion before some started trying to put the blaze out with a garden hose.

Neighbour Sue Sweet grabbed a garden hose to try to put the fire out.

"Horrific, just horrific. You feel hopeless," she said.

Neighbour Jake Lynch says he was woken up by a loud explosion.

"The flames were quite fierce. They were booming out of the lounge room window," he said.

It took firefighters about 20 minutes to extinguish the blaze before they were able to get inside to do a search.

Phil Paterson from the Metropolitan Fire Brigade says firefighters could not get into the house fast enough to save the two people inside.

"Crews attempted to fight their way in and they were stopped by the intense heat and the fact that the house was starting to collapse," he said.

"By the time they were able to fight their way through to the residents they were beyond our help."

The victims have not yet been identified.

Two neighbours were taken to hospital with smoke inhalation.
