The 16.11 (107) to 9.12 (66) victory means the Tigers have now won seven of their last nine games in a round where the first and second-placed teams have both lost.
In the afternoon's other match Greater Western Sydney recorded its first win of 2013 with a 37-point win over fellow strugglers Melbourne at Sydney Showground.
At the MCG, the Tigers doubled Hawthorn's goal count in the first quarter with six majors before the Hawks shot back to blank Richmond in the second quarter and lead by two points at half-time.
But Richmond kicked four in the third period before smashing another six in the final quarter, restricting the ladder-leaders to just the three goals in the second half.
Jack Riewoldt starred again for Richmond with three goals while Trent Cotchin racked up 34 possessions.
Paul Puopolo kicked a double for the Hawks, while Isaac Smith led the disposals count with 29 touches.
Lance Franklin could not follow up last week's eight-goal showing against Essendon, kicking just the one major for the day.

Interview: Giants defender Phil Davis
It took 19 rounds but Greater Western Sydney racked up its first victory of the 2013 season on Saturday afternoon with a six-goal defeat of equally struggling Melbourne.
The Demons kept it close for much of the match despite being out-kicked in the second and final terms but conceding five goals in the last quarter condemned them to a 19.10 (124) to 12.15 (87) loss.
Giants forward Jeremy Cameron and Callan Ward each kicked four goals up front for the home side while Devon Smith bagged a hat-trick.
Midfield trio Adam Treloar, Ward and Tom Scully were heavy contributors in the Greater Western Sydney engine room while Lachie Whitfield and Curtly Hampton also saw plenty of footy.
No Melbourne player could muster more than two with star Jack Watts, ruckman Jack Fitzpatrick and midfielder Dean Kent each adding a double in the losing effort.
I thought every time we got challenged, there was a true response from all the boys out there. The 21 out there did a great job and I'm very proud.
GWS defender Phil Davis
The victory does not lift Greater Western Sydney off the bottom of the ladder but it gets Kevin Sheedy's troops to within four points of the Demons, who sit 17th with just one more win.
The Giants won two games in their inaugural season in the AFL, over Gold Coast and Port Adelaide.
GWS defender Phil Davis said victory was made all the more sweet for his team given the pressure the Giants have been under to win.
"I thought every time we got challenged, there was a true response from all the boys out there," he told Grandstand.
"The 21 out there did a great job and I'm very proud.
"The amount of pressure [we faced] externally, we did a great job just keeping up the process ... but the sense of relief is enormous."
GWS Giants: 19.10 (124) - C Ward 4, J Cameron 4, D Smith 3, J Giles 2, L Whitfield 2, A Tomlinson, T Adams, T Bugg, D Shiel.
Melbourne Demons: 12.15 (87) - J Watts 2, J Fitzpatrick 2, D Kent 2, S Byrnes, J Spencer, J Trengove, J Howe, C Pedersen, M Clisby.
