Hawthorn pips North Melbourne in come-from-behind win; Adelaide thrashes ... - Yahoo!7 News


Hawthorn locked up a top-two finish with a gritty come-from-behind win over North Melbourne at Docklands on Saturday afternoon.


The Hawks saw off North's bright start to ultimately win 17.15 (117) to 15.13 (103).


In the afternoon's other fixture, the with a 68-point win over Melbourne.


The Hawks reeled in North to trail by just two points at quarter-time after the Kangaroos kicked four unanswered goals, before Lance Franklin clawed one back and Jarryd Roughead goaled twice to close the gap.


But it looked all in vain as North Melbourne kicked four goals from as many attempts, before adding another two in a huge second quarter to lead by 13 at the long break.


The game was then turned on its head when the Hawks kicked seven majors to North's four to grab a seven-point lead after three periods.


North could only kick one more goal in the final quarter, while Hawthorn booted home two more to lock up first place on the AFL ladder.


Franklin led the Hawks attack with five goals while Roughead finished with four, and Sam Mitchell chalked up 27 possessions and four marks.


Jack Ziebell and Aaron Black booted two majors for the Kangaroos, while Sam Gibson registerd 28 touches and eight marks.

Crows thump Demons in Football Park curtain call


Lewis Johnston kicked six as Adelaide thumped the Demons by 68 points in their last-ever game at Football Park on Saturday afternoon.


The Crows overcame a sluggish start to ultimately beat the AFL whipping boys 18.12 (120) to 7.10 (52), in Adelaide's last match at the ground before moving to a redeveloped Adelaide Oval next season.


Melbourne had the quarter-time lead after a slow first period, leading 2.3 (15) to 1.2 (8) at the first break.


But normal service resumed as the Crows kicked six goals in the next stanza to lead by 17 points at half-time.


Four more goals followed in the third term as the lead continued to climb, before Adelaide booted home seven in the final quarter to stick the knife in further.


While Johnston played the demolition man, Scott Thompson kept the engine running with 33 touches and seven marks, while Brad Crouch also picked up 31 disposals.


Jack Watts, Colin Sylvia and Jeremy Howe kicked two each for Melbourne, while Lynden Dunn notched up 24 possessions.
